After posting my 16 1/2 month post relaxer/ 101/2 month natural length check, I have gotten lots of questions concerning whether or not I'm going to be using direct heat on my hair to see exactly how long it is. I love seeing how much progress my hair has made over the past almost year and a half but i don't plan on using direct heat just yet :) Here's why:
1. My hair is REALLY fine! I've always had fine strands growing up, and I need to take care not to cause any unesesary damage. My hair is a lot stronger now that it is no longer relaxed, but it's still pretty fragile. (Especially in the back nape area! I have a really sensitive area there that is much finer than the rest of my head lol. I once had a gap in the back when I was relaxed and I'm not sure if it would still be there if I fully straighten it :( 2. Another reason why I'm staying away from direct heat right now is the fact that my hair tends to revert a lot! This was one of my biggest issues growing up and trying to wear my hair straight. It would never stay straight for long and almost immediately started shrinking after being styled. So right now, I don't want to go through the steps to blowout my hair and straighten it only for it not to last. :) 3. Last, I had a TON of heat damage for over 15 years! I'm am not trying to go through that again for a moment with straight hair lol. I'm not really concerned about heat damage from blow dryers on lower settings as much as I am the flat iron... but I prefer to air dry my hair. My plan right now, is to play around with styling my hair dry and wearing some stretched styles more often. I'm curious to see if this will help me control some of the single strands knots that I tend to have. Also, since I've never been big on the defined" look on my fro, and prefer more of an as is fluff lol, I tend to enjoy the way my drier styles come out. My Day 1 wet twistout is one of my least favorite ways to wear my hair because its usually really tight and defined. I tend to prefer Day 2 and Day 3 if I'm wearing a wet twistout. I will be looking into ways to get my hair to dry faster on my wash days so I can dry twist or dry braid my hair for extra stretch. Some options I'm thinking about include : letting it air dry naturally and shrink down for a couple hours, put it in chunky twists, braids, clips, or bands and let it dry for a couple hours, sitting under the dryer for a little bit, using a blow dryer on a low setting to dry my hair some... We'll see! (BTW, since me and Ty will be working out more often I may have to cowash my hair A LOT! Like daily??? I dunno! That may mean more stretched wash and go's because I really don't want to do that much twisting lol. It's going to be getting interesting with my fro :D)
