![]() We recently posted a video asking for topics you wanted to see us discuss :D Interracial relationships was the most requested topic! Here are the questions we were asked: Q: What nationality/race are we? I am black and my husband Ty is half black and half white :D Q: How important was race to us? Race has never played a part in our dating lives. Neither of us had a preference and really wanted to find someone that we connected to on deeper levels. Q: What kind of issues have we faced? There haven't been too many instances with negativity... there are occasional rude comments, but we just brush it off and keep it moving lol. Q: How did our family and friends react? Both of our families were pretty supportive. Negativity was minimal :D Q: Have we talked to our children about race/ interracial relationship etc? We have chosen not to make race a priority in our home. We want our boys to be able to look past skin color :) Q: What has been our biggest challenge as an interracial couple? Honestly, we have not let any negativity or rudeness get to us lol. We feel that God is too good and life is too short to worry about those things. Q: How do we overcome our cultural differences? We are not that different from each other lol. We both share the same faith, have similar interests, and have similar backgrounds. Race has never been a focus in our relationship. We love each other for who we are. :) We've always looked past the color of each others skin and really focused on the qualities each other had. In the end do what makes you happy and don't worry about what others think. In all things keep God first! Check out our YouTube video, Interracial Relationships-Q&A Response- NaturalMe4C :)

This was a good video. As you know the world is so complex. Many interracial couples feel compelled to move to communities that support their lifestyle. So, it was refreshing to hear that you two are doing well and racial strife has not been apart of your family life. But, sometimes I shudder at the racial slurs and incidents even aimed at the president and his wife. It shows we still have a lot to do towards racial equality. And I think your video shows more hope for the world. But I want to say as someone who has worked in the field of social services and education, I have seen many unconscious and conscious negative portrayals and reinforcement of stereotypes for many different ethnic groups. I've also listened and viewed first hand the pain(especially in the teen years) that young people experience when they are unprepared for the ignorant statements and actions caused by racial prejudice. And it is even more frustrating when they don't know how to handle it. I'm sure you two are doing a wonderful job with your children(I can hear it in your videos) but please be aware that you can still educate them in a "light and age appropriate way" on some of the negative stereotypes they will likely encounter in life. (It can be done in nice conversations about racial incidents and opening the discussion on alternative ways to handle inequality and injustice when they see it at school, in their lives and even being demonstrated by "authority". As they grow older, when they are faced with negative and positive events surrounding racial identity issues they will be prepared to stand up in support for that which is "right". I'm sure you two have thought about this. Thank you so much for your blog and inspiring so many couples to look towards love. We live in a society where the older you get it takes more courage to love.
