My BFF.....BIG FLUFFY FRO!

So I cowashed the Eco styler gel out of my hair getting rid of all that crunch lol. I really love to wear my hair full and undefined more often than not.  I think that it allows my fine hair to look much thicker than it actually is :)  I also try to embrace my hair when it's undefined because that's what it does naturally!

This is what I used on my hair for this look :)

Picture
I added my olive oil first to wet hair.  (Gotta lock in some of that moisture! )  Then, I took about a dime size amount of avocado butter and applied it to my fro...concentrating more on the ends.  Last, used a generous amount of Shea Moisture's Curl and Style Milk!  Yup no Tresemme or Aloe Vera Gel today lol!  The milk is very light and airy so it's perfect for the fluff I'm going for with my hair.  The Shea Moisture Hold and Shine Moisture Mist will be used to shape my hair.

Simple Tools!

Picture
Hair clips-  To hold the sections that aren't being worked on, out of the way

Hair Bands-  Elastic bands without metal pieces.  These will be used to stretch the hair.

Hair Pik-  Oh yes!  We definitely need this :)  We want a ton of volume and height!  lol

Bobby Pins- not pictured :)

Let's Go!

Picture
STEP 1:
Section hair off into large parts( I did about 23 sections)

Picture
STEP 2:
Two strand twist and band each section.  Leave a decent amount of hair out at the ends for a fluffier
 look :)

Picture
STEP 3:
Bobby Pin the bangs back :D

Picture
STEP 4: (optional)

Remove bands from the back before going to bed to prevent tension issues lol.  (The hair back there has air dried a little and has been encouraged enough to stretch out some while I finished the rest of my head so it shouldn't shrink as much...)

STEP 5:
Sleep with a satin/silk bonnet!

Final Steps!

Sorry. I just found your blog recently so I'm reading all the back posts. I wanted to comment about my experience with gels. We have a similar hair texture. Here's what I found through experimentation: My twists worked out better when I used the following method:
1) After my hair is semi dry or on second day hair, I spray my hair with a little aloe vera gel/water mix. For some reason the aloe vera and water mix makes the PH of the solution more easy to absorb. Although just water will work with this process too.
2) After spritzing with water, I use an oil of the correct weight for my hair( jojoba or extra virgin olive oil) This serves as a sealant for the moisture in my hair.
3) Then I use a less than dime size amount of some type of butter (like shea or your best butter) primarily on the ends of the hair.
After those three layers the moisture is sealed into the hair. Use your wide tooth comb or whatever tool for detangling. Just make sure you use the tool long enough to get out any residual tangles. Your hair should comb very smooth. You can tell if it is smooth because the hair melts in the hand and almost feels like it wants to shingle with curls.

Now two strand twist the hair. Let the hair dry over night or however you dry your hair.
You will find that the hair absorbs so much of the products but is now softened.
This may not sound like earth shattering news; but what I found is that products like conditioners and gels have something in them which blocks the hair's ability to be sealed by the oil. I found that in the past I was relying more on the conditioner to as a moisturizer when in fact the oil and the butter was the key to sealing. What made me think of this is two things:
1) Dickey, hair dresser of Taren 916 made a statement that one can err on the side of more product because our hair absorbs a lot.
and 2) I remembered when I was younger my mom used to use royal crown after she dampened my hair and my hair was soft. Of course knowing what I know now, I won't use Royal crown; but the key was that the conditioners in the old days were only used for conditioning. And no gel was used.

Anyway experiment with this and let me know if it works for you.
You may need to experiment and one side of your head use more oil and butter and on the other side less and see what happens. I always experiment with two sides of my head with technique so I can see what works better. Once I found the right amount of oil and butter to use to seal the moisture in, my twists are more moisturized for second and third day hair.
Good luck.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Sandy!
Thanks for the tips! It sounds like we both do similar things :D I'm doing a verison of the LOC method (liquid, oil, cream) where I use water for my liquid, olive oil for oil, and avocado butter which doubles as a second oil and also can be considered a cream lol. I double up of the "oil/butter" because my hair seems to work better with butters and oils. Whatever conditioner I use as a leave in, can also be considered like a cream lol. MANY layers!!!
Ever since I stopped doing the LCO (leave in, cream, oil) method in September, my hair retains moisture for days until its time to cowash! ( I mainly use aloe vera gel to cut down on my ssks lol.) Before, I would have to moisturize several times a day :( I really like the idea of cutting back on lots of conditioner so I'm gonna try that out! Thanks!

Hi Sandy!
I forgot to mention that since I've given up shampoo, I haven't had to use as much product (oil, butter, conditioner etc) as I did in the beginning when I first chopped! I'm lovin that lol!

This is a really great style!!! I like the puffy Afro. Instead of twisting, I roll my hair with perm rods the night before, and then pic it out the next day. I get a nice puffy fro too with a lot of fullness and elongation. After a few days of exercising, sometimes an Afro is all I can get. I have learned to be happy with what I got. You taught me that one:))). God bless you.
