Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel and My Hair...

This has got to be the most popular gel for ladies with natural hair lol.  I can't count how many times I have heard and seen this gel being used!  I have not been able to get this gel to work for me without some kind of disappointment.  My hair always feels dry when using it.  And I touch my hair way too much for that! LOL
So, I was inspired to give this gel another shot.  After seeing some awesome results from other users, I was like, "Why not?"  The huge tub I have was just collecting dust anyways lol.  I figured that since my moisture levels have been a lot better and since I'm using olive oil and avocado butter in my regimen, it should make the gel agree better with my hair.  Here we go again!  LOL

Picture
This is what I used for this Wash and Go:

First I added my olive oil to wet hair, followed by a little avocado butter.  After that, I only used a nickel size amount of Tresemme to avoid white balls and flaking in my hair lol.  Next, I added a nice amount of Eco Styler Gel to medium sized sections of my hair.  I smoothed the gel through my hair and separated my coils as I smoothed.
I didn't take super small sections and shingle....it was after midnight LOL and I was TIRED.  The gel went on a lot better than it did before...it wasn't as dry feeling.   I think that the olive oil and avocado butter gave it more slip :)  (I haven't noticed a big difference between "shingling" and "smoothing"with my hair. Either way, my hair still shrinks all the way up and it looks pretty much the same in the end lol.)
After I was done with the gel, I started to panic lol....I just knew it was going to be VERY CRUNCHY when it dried......so I sprayed some Shea moisture Hold and Shine on my fro. (about 12-15 pumps lol)  I was really trying to avoid hard hair!

The next morning, my hair was 99% dry and it looked awesome!  It was totally shrunken but my tiny coils were magnified! (It does a much better job at amplifying and clumping my coils than the other gels I have.)   I thought it looked soo cute!  LOL  I was actually shocked.  My hair was pretty shiny...but it also had a bit of a white cast over it ugh...   And the feel???  VERY CRISPY!  lol  I used the palm of my hand to feel it first and it felt like potato chips....but with the back of my hand it felt softer...not sure what to make of that! (It failed the front of the hand test, and passed the back of the hand test lol.)  I'm flip flopping with this gel!
I can't believe I'm saying this about the ECO STYLER but I actually loved the way it made my hair look.  BUT I cant stand the cripsiness :(  However, even with that, I am willing to try using it again for another wash and go. Maybe I'll tweak what products I layer with the gel.  I think I could have gotten way more than 3 days of wear with this wash and go which is awesome.   Hmmm...    The jury is still out for this gel for me lol.    Have you tried the Eco Styler Olive Oil gel?  How does it work for your hair?

Hey NaturalMe! Hope you had a great time watching the Super Bowl. I enjoyed the game. I have never tried the Eco Styler gel because I'm afraid of flaking. I can't stand having hard crunchy hair. I think you should stick with what works best for you. Your styles are much better with the aloe Vera gel. I once read that there over 40 different shades of African American women in the U.S, just because our heritage blends are so different. So naturally we all have different hair textures too. So I would say skip the Eco-styler. Pro-style gel makes my hair hard and crunchy, but I have a cousin who uses it all the time because it makes her hair curly.

Man, I gave my Ecostyler gel away! i know people rave about it but I hate crunch. I too, touch my hair all the time. I find that wash n go's dont define my kinks(4c) . I've learned to listen to my air and it says: No Ecostyler Gel!LOL!

Hi Christie!
I know what you mean lol. My hair doesn't like gel very much either but I usually use aloe vera gel at least, because it cuts down on some of the ssks lol. I think my hair just craves moisture to the max!

Hi Candy!
Yeah I'm so wishy washy with this gel lol. I'm going to play around with the other gels I have and also conditoners to see if I can avoid hard hair. Whenever my hair shrinks is likely to become a little hard anyways so I really don't need anymore of that lol. Eco did a good job with my coils but the crunch is not cool lol.

I use the Eco Olive Oil Styling Gel and I love it. Very little flaking. It only has a slight crunch for me but to combat that I spray an olive oil mist or some something like twisted Sista curl spray. Works great. Also the curl custards work great as well. I wear a satin beanie to bed which preserves my hair overnight This works for me.

Hi there! I'm a YTube subscriber and a fellow 4C. I big chopped almost 1 1/2 years ago after a bad transition hair style that only got worse and I'd had enough. That bad has now translated to good because my hair is healthy and growing!

I too was ecstatic about Eco because of the YTube claims and it was on sale for 2.99 for the big container. Child I bought 4 and my mom 2 or 3 for me. Lets just say I'm glad they were on sale. I still have 3 big containers collecting dust. Others I gave away and one I tried to make a concoction hoping I could get some use. It was a fail. I guess the only use I will get is to slick down my edges are use if I do braid extensions to help blend the textures.

Hi Tara!
Omg Maybe it's a 4C thing lol! I was using the jar of Eco for the same thing...edges barely lol . And even then I was frustrated with the hardness! This was the first time i used it all over my head! Before, I would always give up before finishing my entire head, because it felt soo dry going on lol. Oh well... :(

My hair is 3c/4a/3b and EcoStyler doesn't work for me either. I don't like the hardness either. I am wondering if that hardness comes from the protein in it. I have been using ic Hair Polisher Styling Gel and getting better success, it has protein in it too but. It defines better, gives more moisture and leaves my hair soft.

I also have 4c hair. My hair does not do well with EcoStyler gel WITH other stuff (that white residue you mentione). Then I saw AFRICANEXPORTS's video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s300zDzCDQ. It changed my life! LOL! I know that you don't like "crunchy" hair, but I only use the EcoStyler and make sure it is COMPLETELY dry and don't touch it at all while drying. Then I use olive oil once it is dry and sorta of crunch it and it softens up. Works soooo good.

Hii! I used to have the same problem, but I started using olive oil after, just like Galanda said to soften it up. Also, ecostyler has so many different levels of hold the one you got is the maximum hold I recently found a lesser level of hold and it worked just as great but left my hair sooooo much softer! I hope this helps!

I have been natural for exactly 1 year. When I first BC I could get up in the morning and do a quick cowash (olive oil and conditioner mixed) then apply a leave in conditioner, moisturizer, and a little gel and I would have the prettiest curls. Now when I attempt to do the same process I get a head full of white flakes and product residue. What is the problem!

Hey Angie!
If you are using different moisturizer and leave ins than what you used when you first BC, the gel may not be mixing well with them. If I'm using something new, I like to take a little of the product I'm gonna use, for example a conditioner, and a little of the gel and mix them together between my palms to make sure they work well together. I try to see if the consistency is smooth/cream like or if little white balls/beads form lol. If there are balls/beads, this is likely to happen in your hair resulting in flakes :)

I'm sharing this post from amazon about my experience w/ eco styler. Gave it one star.

"This Garbage Gave Me Bald Spots"
May 5th, 2013

Every time i used this product--whether just on my edges, an entire wash and go, or mixing it with oils or conditioners-- It thinned my hair. I ended up with 3 bald spots in the middle of my head, and it made my edges thin. I kept using it b/c i was in denial, but ultimately it broke my hair. It was strange b/c i never saw hair fall out on my bed or in my brush, but then i would see the thinning, like it disintegrated my hair or something.

I don't know how long it's gonna take for the nickle sized spot near my edges to fill in, but it's already been a year. I want to be able to slick down my edges, I don't really care much about curl definition, but i can't even do that. It also made my hair crunchy when i used it and stiff. No matter if i used small amounts or more, or mixed it w/ oil or conditioner, it's garbage. I've got tight 4b hair that gets more loose toward the nape of my neck, btw. I'm gonna try using the blue eco hold level 5 and hopefully that works

Update: 6/1/13
After buying the blue medium hold gel, I've come to realize that the hardness of the hold has nothing to do with the bald spots. This solidified what already knew from my results w/ layering and mixing the eco styler w/ oils and conditioners.

When it came to function, The blue eco was alright-- gave shine, definition, and it also gave me more Hair Loss. I had thinning on my edges, and a piece of hair near that nickle sized bald spot that still hasn't gone away have shortened to half the size. I hate this brand of gel. I've never had any problems with balding until using this. I wouldn't even recommend it to someone I hate.

I gave the green one away to my cousin b/c I just wanted it far away from me ages ago. She's telling me that the product has started thinning her hair as well. My hair follicles are damaged, the bald spot is completely smooth bare. It hasn't grown back since I noticed it a year ago, and even the blue one now has caused me problems. I am very frustrated with this product. Hopefully I can grow my curls back.

I'm not sure what it is about this gel; it's supposed to be all natural, so I don't know what the problem is. Is it the excessive amount of protein? W/ the eco blue, My hair wasn't hard or tangled, and I no longer comb or brush my hair. I go in the shower, and let the water detangle while I smooth sections of hair w/ my fingers, and it get perfectly detangled.

So there's no logical reason to me what could be causing the breakage. Maybe my hair just hates whatever is in this product. I hope someone can investigate the effects of excessive protein. My hair wasn't particularly dry, it was pretty moisturized, and soft.

I've used flax seed gel, and another type of protein gel before that didn't claim to be "all natural" but also didn't leave me a naked spot on my head. And I've had natural hair for 6 years. Ah well, someone w/ this issue has to speak up about this so they can know they aren't the only one.

Beware, pen spring tight 4b/ 4c curly girls (like me), be vigilant and as soon as you notice your hair thinning, drop the product, it only gets worse.

Update: 6/2/13
Been doing some research about ph. Curly hair's ph must be acidic, 4-5.5 ph. Eco styler gel has a pretty high ph of 7, coupled with conditioners and other products I use that also have high ph, (like shea moisture conditioner which i leave in) this can be changing my hair's ph, and not for the better. I have to many product w/ high ph, and I'm not using anything to balance my hair's ph back.

Based on what I learned, too much high ph can actually DISINTEGRATE the hair, which is exactly what was happening to me. My hair's ph was suffering. I did an apple cider (already came diluted to 5% in the gallon) rinse on my hair and when i saw the effect i decided to leave it in my hair all night. It was soft. This is what lead me to research about ph.

I learned if the ph is too acidic, it can eat the keratin and protein in the hair, and basically disintegrate the hair as well, so you want in that 4 to 5.5 range.

This information lead me to pour the cider in my blue eco styler. If my hair loss is due to excessive protein, the vinegar should help neutralize some of it and eat it away. If it is b/c the ph is too high, I've lowered it w/ the acidic vinegar. My hair was still defined, the hold was a bit softer, it didn't effect the lasting and definition. I think i poured like 2 cups just be safe and shook it.

I'm gonna try one last time and see if this is a solution, and if i notice thinning I'll report back here. I also will take too adding a bit of vinegar to my spray bottle with water, oil mixed in to moisturize.

Sister Pinke, for heaven's sake, please give up on the gel completely. Even if you find a way to work with it, why would you want to? It causes balding (!) due to pH, ingredients, hardening hair, etc. Please throw it in the trash, and devise a LOC and seal method. Try a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, a creamy leave-in conditioner, a coating of warm coconut+olive oil. If you don't want to seal with a butter, you might try a very light coating of old-fashioned hair grease, e.g. Softee, Blue Magic, Royal Crown. Best wishes!

If your still trying to figure out how to get rid of the crunch with eco-styler you can put coconut oil in your hair after it dries. That usually softens it up for me!!! Thanks for your awesome posts, my hair is pretty similar to yours so it's really encouraging :)

I totally agree the olive oil eco styler leaves hair a little on the "crunchy" side so i switched to the clear eco styler which leaves my hair much softer or i use curl activator gel and i use either of these in combination with myDNA hair butter, when im shingling...hope this helps!

Hello ....
Eco styler defines my curls pretty good ...im using the orange/yellow one.... I would wash my hair and then put a leave in then then some olive oil and then eco styler....
The next day my hair would be curly and soft the only problem is that i get white stuff a lot on my hair because of the gel on...what can i do ? I live in Germany and here they don't sell products as the shea line or kinky curly or keracare etc ...
Is there a way not to make that white stuff come all the time ? Thank you

Hi Christina!
The white flakes usually come from mixing products that don't play well together or from low porosity. If you leave out the "leave in" before the eco styler you will not likely see any white flakes. You can also try a liquid or gel curl activator as a leave in to avoid white flakes with eco styler. Hope that helps!

I used ecostyler gel for years. Hold and definition was good. I even sprayed temp black color over my hair to deal with the white flakiness. Uggh. But all in all I LOST HAIR. It broke off my already fragile fro in chunks over time. My stylist urged me never to use it anymore. It even changed my texture to brittle. So mad it holds so good with such dire consequences. I have 4c hair.

I love Eco styler gel. I no longer have the problem of the white residue because I don't use a cream based leave in conditioner. Eco styler doesn't work well with a cream based leave in conditioner. As for the "crunchy" feeling, I rub a little bit of oil(coconut, jojoba, almond, or vitamin E) through my hair once it dries and the crunch immediately go away. I have been watching a lot of videos where the Eco styler is being used. The major problem that I see is that everyone is using too many products in their hair when using the Eco styler.

My hair is a bit drier than it was when I was younger (im 45+). I also live in a very dry climate in western Colorado which also contributes to the dryness of my hair. I use the Shielo Restore Oil because its perfect for making my hair soft and moist again. I have short hair so I only use a small amount on my fingers and spread it through all of my hair. I can shower twice a day when necessary and if I use the Shielo Oil, my hair does not dry out. I like the result!

Hey Lynn!
It's up to you :) Sometimes gel can be a bit harsh on the hair so I wouldn't constantly re apply it without rinsing or washing it out first. Also misting your hair with some water can reactivate it so you won't have to re apply it all the time. :)

To my fellow 4C ladies. This gel is AMAZING for our hair. It's about the only thing that will give us the curl definition we want without manipulating our hair braid outs, twist outs, etc.

But in order for it to work, you can't just slap it on. First, you must, I repeat MUST detangle. Always make sure the hair is wet when applying the gel. Work in small sections starting with the ends, and work your way up.

If you don't want the crunchiness, just add your fav moisturizer to your hair, seal it in with your fav. Oil, and lastly apply the gel from tip to root. It needs to be completely covered....pretty much soaked.

Hope this helps!

I'm with you on this one. It works ok and I do get some definition but I absolutely hate the white gel caste and the crunchiness of my hair. Plus my hair just feels so sticky with it on. My hair is very thick and I have not yet found a gel that really hold my hair well. I also find that because of the thickness of my hair the gel tends to cause matting at my roots when I do a wasn n go, as all the hair gets stuck together when dried. I'm considering giving gorilla snot a try.

I am new to the natural community and have found that if you use an oil spray keratin oil after you use eco styler, you will not get the crunch. I can't stand the crunch.

The best I have ever used and still using is the GKhair gel. A perfect find and good fit for my hair. Very much effective in creating sleek and smooth hair style that last long with strong hold. Produces an optimal results when used before blow drying. Just amazing. :) <3

Eco styler gel with olive oil comments: I have a mixed texture of hair. It appears to be between 3 & 4c in some areas Why!? Lol

I recently shaved my head bald to start healthy regrowth. 2/1/2017. Using Jamaican black castor with coconut oil, olive oil, almond oul, avocado oil, flaxseed, grapeseed, vit. E, jojoba, argan, macadamia, more. Plus amla, coconut, egg mixture and did baking soda mask and ACV rinse. You name it, I'm doing it.

The hair is going back, bald spots are filling in slowly.

So, that's why I thought I'd give this Eco gel a try to tame my wiry coils. It's too dry. Hate the crunch. I don't feel it's good for my hair.

Disappointed.

I used a version of the Anthony Dickey method with inexpensive products. First, Emerge leave-in conditioner on soaking wet hair, second, Blue Magic, third, Eco Styler Gel. Minimized shrinkage and defined my curls. Best wash and go I have ever done and it took under 20 minutes!
